    Lex Barker, Tarzan, and Winnetou

The American actor Lex Barker appeared in many Hollywood and international feature films, but he found his greatest fame in West Germany and Europe. By the time Barker returned to the United States in the early 1970s, he was pretty much forgotten there.

Barker did gain a degree of fame in Hollywood as Tarzan, following in the footsteps of Johnny Weissmuller, the Olympic swimmer who played the same role – and concealed the fact that he had not been born in the US. Lex Barker also had success in other Hollywood films, but he made far more movies in Britain, France, Italy, and West Germany. In the 1960s, whenever the Amerikaner was seen in public in Germany he was soon surrounded by fans of his German pictures, particularly the five Westerns in which he played the German-born land surveyor working for American railroads in the American West, a character known as Old Shatterhand, the paleface friend of the Apache Indian Winnetou. Both of these fictional characters were created by the German author Karl May (pron. MYE, 1842-1912).
